 LITURGY AND LIFE

I am pleased to be able to share a subject of great profundity; “Liturgy and Life”. The amount of information pertaining to this subject is immense, but the connection is simple. The word ‘Liturgy’ has its origins from the old Greek “láos” = people and “ergon” = work (laosergon or public work). Later this word evolved to “leitourgia” (public service) and finally it was adopted in Latin as “liturgia” (service of the people). The Catholic Church is precisely that, “Servant of the People”. We all form the Church, which means that every baptized Catholic has the mission to serve others and the Mass helps us to discern the “action” of the liturgy. This is better explained to us in Episcopal terms as follows: “The Church regularly gathers to worship and thank God, to remember and bring to present times the work of God, to offer common prayer and to celebrate the kingdom of peace and justice. This action of the Christian assembly is liturgy”.

Each person has a historic background; therefore, our actions done in the interest of service also remain; in other words, the liturgy is tangible work. It requires effort, energy, creativity, perseverance among other things. The liturgical celebration does not happen in a passive ambience and is not for spectators. The congregation is an active component of the liturgy itself. Therefore, our full participation in the liturgy requires expressed attention in posture and visual communication with the community.

God has manifested himself in many ways. We can’t just say that we communicate with Him through our spiritual internalization and by opening our hearts when we hear His Word; God became flesh through His Son Jesus Christ and the Word of God previously invisible became tangible, so that through our senses we could discover God in a body like ours.


In conclusion “Liturgy and Life” are two elements that fuse together in the incarnation. What once was invisible is now visible. The Catholic Church vehemently devotes its efforts to safeguard the sacramental elements and activities through the liturgy, such as the breaking of the bread, the immersing in water, the scent of incense, the fire of the candles, etc. It is important to reiterate that all of us form the Church; therefore, the liturgical celebration is the action of all for the common good of one body, the body of Christ.

Me es grato compartir con el lector un tema de gran profundidad; “Liturgia y Vida”. No obstante a la enormidad de información que existe en relación a este tema, la conexión es sencilla. La palabra Liturgia tiene su origen del griego antiguo “láos” = pueblo y “ergon” = obra (laosergon u obra pública). Posteriormente esta palabra evolucionó a “leitourgia” (servicio público) y al final fue adoptado en latín como “liturgia” (servicio del pueblo). La Iglesia Católica es precisamente eso, “Servidora del Pueblo”. La Iglesia la formamos todos, lo que significa que los bautizado tenemos la misión de servir a nuestro prójimo y la Misa nos ayuda a discernir la “acción” de la liturgia. Esto nos es mejor explicado en términos espicopales de la siguiente manera; “La Iglesia se reune regularmente para alabar y dar gracias a Dios, para recordar y hacer presentes las obras de Dios, a ofrecer oración común, a hacer realidad y celebrar el reino de la paz y la justicia. Esa acción de la asamblea cristiana es liturgia”.

Toda persona tiene una trascendencia histórica; por lo tanto, nuestras obras arraigadas al servicio también la tienen; es decir, la liturgia es trabajo tangible que requiere de esfuerzo, energía, creatividad, perseverancia entre otras cosas. La celebración litúrgica no sucede en un ambiente pasivo ni de espectadores, ya que la congregación es componente activo de la liturgia misma. Por lo tanto, nuestra participación plena en la liturgia requiere de atención expresada en postura y comunicación visual, compartida con la comunidad.  

Dios se ha manifestado de muchas maneras. No sólo podemos decir que nos comunicamos con El por medio de nuestra interiorización espiritual y por la apertura de nuestros corazones al escuchar su palabra. Dios se encarnó a través de su Hijo Cristo Jesús y la palabra de Dios anteriormente invisible se hizo tangible para que nuestros sentidos pudieran descubrir a Dios en un cuerpo como el nuestro.

En conclusión “Liturgia y Vida” son dos elementos que se fusionan en la encarnación. Lo que una vez fue invisible ahora es visible. Nuestra iglesia católica fundada por Cristo Jesús, a través de la liturgia, vehementemente devota su esfuerzo en salvaguardar los elementos y actividades sacramentales, partir el pan, la inmersión en el agua, la unción de los óleos, el fuego de las velas, etc. Cabe reiterar que todos formamos la iglesia, por ende, la celebración litúrgica es acción de todos por el bien común en un solo cuerpo, el cuerpo de Cristo.
