THANK YOU “OLA”
Please accept my sincere gratitude for a wonderful farewell celebration last Sunday evening. The love with which I have been blessed will be an ever living reminder of your love for Jesus Christ and His church. These past seven years have brought me great joy and renewed my desire to continue serving as a Catholic priest.
During years of great difficulty, when scandals arose and the priesthood was shrouded in shame and suspicion, you, the good people of OLA made it easy for me to be proud that I am a Roman Catholic priest. Yes, I am proud that I am a priest and prouder still that I have been your priest. I am grateful that you have helped me grow spiritually and that as a result of your patient understanding I am no longer obsessed with being bald or worried about having a strange “foreign born and raised” Brooklyn, NY accent!
You taught me more about being a priest than I ever learned in the seminary. Your faith and genuine desire to serve others were the perfect balance for the theological and moral training I received in my years of formation. If I had my way, I’d make OLA the first assignment for every newly ordained priest. I’d shout from the rooftops that while we we’re not perfect we are getting closer to perfection each day. With one another’s support and assistance we proceeded each day on the journey to spiritual perfection and even though we were sometimes far from arriving at our destination, we learned to live in the sacrament of the present moment, content with our spiritual progress at every moment of each day.
| I am grateful to have been a witness to the development of a greater intercultural awareness and sensitivity that is now more evident in our parish. I am awed by the ways in which we have found unity in our diversity and opportunity rather than strife and discord in the midst of our differences. I am inspired that we have striven to be guided by our parish mission statement: |

So many people deserve to be thanked, but time and space do not permit me to mention each of you by name. I would be remiss however, if I did not say a special word of thanks to the Sisters of Mercy, Sr. Maura and Sr. Camillus. Their regular presence at the daily celebration of the Eucharist , their fidelity to prayer, their extremely selfless and generous service to all of us was what got me through each day, especially when the days were dark and difficult. It’s humbling to know that during my illness and absence from the parish, OLA, under their leadership and with your support, not only survived, but thrived. Thanks, Sisters for running a great religious education program. Thanks for ministering to the “Young at Heart.” Thanks for sharing your vocation with us. Thanks for living your vows! Thanks for allowing me to kid with you!
I also want to acknowledge the dedicated service of Deacon John and Marie Barna and Deacon Dan and Pam O’Camb. These married couples in the midst of busy and demanding professional and family lives took the time to attend years of classes and countless meetings throughout the course of their formation. As they studied, they also prayed and found time to serve even before the “official day” of ordination. They brought a vision that challenged me to see life differently and they made sure I knew I was loved. They even helped me to slow down and enjoy life by showing me how to achieve balance and harmony in my life and ministry. We prayed and played, cried and laughed, and yes, we lived life to the full. Deacon Dan and Pam have had their own personal struggles with their health. They make being sick look easy: they even make it look like fun. Without saying a word, Pam managed to get me wondering if I’d look as good in a hair piece as she did in her new hairstyle, created by “Chemo.” Their courage in the face of a stroke and cancer remind me how important it is to live life one day at a time to the best of our ability.

During the years of my pastorate our parish staff grew and became more ethnically diverse. This important development sensitized us to the real meaning of what it is to be “Catholic.” Our church does not belong to any one culture, language or ethnic group, majority or minority. Ours is a universal church. We are the body of Christ. Thanks to a great music ministry we can now sing that truth in at least three languages, English, Spanish and Tagalog. Thanks to the excellent service provided by our lay leaders and ministers, both paid and volunteer, liturgical or social, we are able to come together without having to deny what makes us different. And yet we are still able to celebrate what makes us the same. We are the body of Christ. We never sing “I am the body of Christ.” We never say “My Father, who art in heaven.” We say “Our Father,” not only because it’s right but because it’s what we believe.
How can I say thank you to our youth, AYM High, AYM Jr. High, AYM Filipino and AYM Hispanic? How can I show my appreciation to all those students and support staff involved in Confirmation prep? They sing, they dance, wrap (rhyming poetry and gifts) and play music, make videos, run and jump and flash smiles that could melt glaciers. They help us old people with computers and media ministry and do it without making us feel dumb! They give the best high fives and even taught me how to do “knuckles.” They work miracles and make me feel young when I’m with them. They break down stereotypes by crossing the vast ethic, language and cultural divides so many continue to struggle with. Thanks for sharing your life, energy, friendship and nachos on Sunday nights. Thanks for your Facebook friend requests, for your Confirmation questions, for altar serving and for your “LUV.” Your presence and participation at OLA strengthen our hope that the church will indeed continue growing.
I also want to thank our volunteers, like Blake Boggust and the many people who prefer to remain anonymous. You know that I appreciate all you do to make our church, field and school look nicer, inside and out. You know that I love how your generosity helps us celebrate liturgy better. You know that I’m thrilled every time I cross the street and walk through the rose garden on my way to the most beautiful rectory in our diocese. I’m like a child on Christmas morning when I step out the back door and sit under our new canopies and on the elevated deck in the back yard. I could go on but I won’t because there is no end to the goodness I find in all the people of OLA. I’m going to miss you when I go but I’m going to carry each of you in my heart so we’ll never really be far apart.

GRACIAS, "OLA"
Por favor acepten mi sincera gratitud por su presencia y preparación de tan maravillosa fiesta de despedida el domingo 26 de junio por la tarde. El amor con el que he sido bendecido será siempre un recuerdo vivo de su amor por Jesucristo y su iglesia. Estos pasados siete años me han dado un gran gozo y han renovado mi deseo de continuar sirviendo como sacerdote católico.
Durante aquellos años de grandes dificultades, tiempo en el que los escándalos se hicieron presentes y el sacerdocio se vio envuelto de vergüenza y sospechas, ustedes, las buenas personas de OLA, hicieron que las cosas fueran fáciles para mi en sentirme orgulloso de ser un sacerdote católico romano. Sí, estoy orgulloso de ser un sacerdote, y estoy aún más orgulloso de haber sido su sacerdote. Les estoy muy agradecido por haberme ayudado a crecer espiritualmente. Como resultado de su paciente comprensión, ya no estoy obsesionado de ser pelón ni tampoco me preocupa tener ese extraño acento “nativo y criado” de Brooklyn, NY.
Ustedes me enseñaron más sobre lo que es ser sacerdote de lo que aprendí en el seminario. Su fe y su genuino deseo de servir a los demás, fue el perfecto balance del entrenamiento teológico y moral que recibí en mis años de formación. Si fuera por mí, haría que todo sacerdote recién ordenado empezara a servir primero en OLA. Yo gritaría desde los techos que mientras no somos perfectos, sí nos acercamos a la perfección cada día. Con la ayuda y apoyo de cada uno, continuamos día a día en la jornada rumbo a la perfección espiritual y aunque estamos muchas veces lejos de llegar a nuestro destino, aprendimos a vivir en el sacramento del momento presente, contentos de nuestro progreso espiritual en cada momento de cada día.
Estoy muy agradecido por haber sido testigo del desarrollo que vivimos hacia una mayor conciencia y sensibilidad intercultural, que es ahora muy evidente en nuestra parroquia. Estoy emocionado por la manera en la que hemos encontrado unidad y oportunidad dentro nuestra diversidad, en lugar de haber tenido conflictos y discordia debido a nuestras diferencias. Me inspira ver que hemos salido adelante guiados por la declaración misionera de la parroquia:
“Inspirada por el mensaje del Evangelio, por medio del Espíritu Santo, la Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción será identificada por su cálida hospitalidad, la fortaleza de nuestros ministerios y el vigor de nuestras liturgias. Nos comprometemos a servir a todos como siervos del Señor”.
Muchas personas merecen recibir agradecimiento, pero el tiempo y el espacio que tengo disponible no me permiten mencionar a cada uno de ustedes por nombre; no obstante, sería negligente de mi parte no pronunciar unas palabras de agradecimiento especiales para las Hermanas de la Misericordia, hermana Maura y hermana Camillus. Su presencia regular en la celebración diaria de la Eucaristía, su fidelidad a la oración y su servicio extremadamente generoso a todos nosotros fue lo que me impulsó a través de cada día, especialmente en días difíciles y obscuros. Humildemente reconozco, que durante aquellos días que estuve enfermo y ausente de la parroquia en OLA, bajo su dirección y con el apoyo de ustedes, la parroquia no solo sobrevivió, sino prosperó. Gracias hermanas por llevar avante un gran programa de educación religiosa. Gracias por servir en ministerio al grupo “Jóvenes de Corazón”. Gracias por compartir su vocación con nosotros. ¡Gracias por vivir sus votos! ¡Gracias por permitirme bromear con ustedes!
También quiero reconocer el servicio y dedicación del diácono John y Marie Barna y el diácono Dan y Pam O’Camb. Estas parejas casadas se tomaron el tiempo en asistir a clases de preparación por años, yendo a un sin número de juntas durante el curso de su formación en medio de sus tan demandantes vidas familiares y profesionales. En lo que ellos estudiaron, también rezaron y encontraron tiempo para servir incluso antes del “día oficial” de su ordenación. Ellos trajeron una visión que me retó a ver la vida en forma distinta y se aseguraron a que yo supiera que era amado.
Los amo a todos y que Dios los bendiga.

Ellos incluso me ayudaron a bajar un poco el ritmo para disfrutar la vida, enseñándome cómo lograr un buen balance y harmonía en mi vida y ministerio. Rezamos juntos y también jugamos, lloramos y reímos, y sí, vivimos la vida en forma completa. El diácono Dan y Pam enfrentaron su propia lucha atravesando problemas de salud. Ellos nos hacen sentir que estar enfermo es fácil; incluso ellos lo hacen ver como si fuera divertido. Sin decir palabra, Pam hizo que yo me preguntara si me hubiera visto tan bien usando un tupé, así como ella se veía bien usando su elegante peluca a causa de su “Quimioterapia”. Su valor ante la amenaza de un infarto y ante el cáncer, me recordó qué tan importante es vivir la vida un día a la vez lo mejor que podemos.
También quiero agradecer a la señora Sue Long y a su facultad y personal por crear la mejor Escuela Católica de la Diócesis. Su energía, dedicación y profesionalismo me hace sentirme orgulloso y decirles “USTEDES SI LA HACEN”. Y claro, los estudiantes de la escuela de OLA y sus programas de educación religiosa, ¡son los MEJORES¡.
Durante mis años como pastor, el personal de nuestra parroquia creció y se convirtió en un grupo más étnicamente diverso. Este importante desarrollo, nos sensibilizó al real significado de lo que significa ser “Católico”. Nuestra Iglesia no le pertenece a ninguna cultura en particular, ni a una lengua, ni a un grupo étnico, ni a una mayoría o minoría. Nuestra Iglesia es universal. Somos el cuerpo de Cristo. Gracias a un gran ministerio de música ahora podemos cantar esa verdad hasta en tres idiomas, inglés, español y tagalog. Gracias al excelente servicio proporcionado por nuestros líderes y ministros laicos, ambos en nómina y voluntarios, litúrgicos y sociales, podemos unirnos sin tener que negar lo que nos hace diferentes. Aún así, podemos celebrar lo que nos hace iguales. Somos el cuerpo de Cristo. Nunca cantamos “Soy el cuerpo de Cristo”. Nunca decimos “Padre mío que estás en el cielo”, decimos “Padre nuestro”, no solo porque esto es lo correcto sino porque esto es lo que creemos.
¿Cómo puedo agradecerles a ustedes nuestros jóvenes, AYM High, AYM Junior High, AYM Filipino y AYM Hispano? ¿Cómo puedo mostrar mi apreciación a todos aquellos estudiantes y personal de apoyo que están envueltos en la preparación para la Confirmación? Ellos cantan, ellos bailan, envuelven (poesía en rima y regalos) y tocan música, hacen videos, corren, brincan y deslumbran con sus radiantes sonrisas que pueden derretir glaciares. Nos ayudan a nosotros los viejos con equipos de cómputo y el ministerio de la media y lo hacen de tal manera que no nos hacen sentir tontos. Ellos dan las mejores “palmas arriba” y hasta me enseñaron a saludar usando los “nudillos”. Ellos hacen milagros y me hacen sentir joven cuando estoy con ellos. Ellos eliminan estereotipos combinando lenguas y divisiones culturales con las que muchos aún continúan luchan. Gracias por compartir sus vidas, energía, amistad y los nachos los domingos por la tarde. Gracias por sus invitaciones a “Facebook”, por sus preguntas de “Confirmación”, por servir como servidores del altar y por su amor. Su presencia y participación en OLA fortalece nuestra esperanza de que la Iglesia de hecho, siga creciendo.
También quiero agradecer a nuestros voluntarios como Blake Boggust y las muchas otras personas que prefieren permanecer anónimas. Ustedes saben que aprecio todo lo que hacen para hacer que nuestra iglesia, el campo y la escuela se vean más bonitos por dentro y por fuera. Ustedes saben lo mucho que amo cómo su generosidad nos ayuda a celebrar la liturgia mejor. Ustedes saben cómo me emociona cada vez que cruzo la calle y camino a través del jardín de rosas que me conduce a la más bonita Rectoría de la Diócesis. Soy como un niño en la mañana de navidad cuando salgo por la puerta trasera y me siento bajo nuestros nuevos toldos y sobre el patio elevado en el jardín de atrás. Podría continuar pero no lo voy a hacer, porque todo lo bueno que hay en la gente de OLA no tiene final. Los voy extrañar mucho pero me llevo dentro de mí corazón a cada uno de ustedes, así es que realmente nunca estaremos tan separados.
Los amo a todos y que Dios los bendiga.
